US FCC Certification

I. Basic Concepts of FCC Certification

FCC, namely the Federal Communications Commission, was established in 1934 and is an independent U.S. government agency responsible for regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable.FCC certification is a mandatory certification system formulated by the Commission to regulate the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio frequency (RF) performance of electronic devices, reduce mutual interference among electronic devices, and safeguard communication order and public health and safety.

II. Scope of Application of FCC Certification

The scope of application of FCC certification is extremely broad, covering virtually all electronic and electrical products entering the U.S. market, as long as such products are capable of emitting, receiving, or utilizing radio frequency energy to operate.Specifically, it mainly includes the following major categories:

1.Communication Equipment

Such as mobile phones, two-way radios, wireless routers, Bluetooth devices, satellite phones, etc. These devices directly participate in the communication process, and their radio frequency performance and electromagnetic compatibility directly affect communication quality and stability. Therefore, they are key regulatory targets of FCC certification.

2.Information Technology Equipment

Including computers, laptops, tablets, printers, scanners, copiers, etc. These types of equipment generate a certain amount of electromagnetic radiation during operation. If not properly regulated, they may cause interference to surrounding communication devices and other electronic equipment.

3.Broadcasting and Television Equipment

Such as televisions, radios, set-top boxes, satellite receivers, etc. The transmission of broadcast television signals requires a stable electromagnetic environment, and related equipment must comply with FCC certification standards to avoid causing interference to broadcast television signals.

4. Medical Electronic Equipment

Some medical electronic devices, such as electrocardiographs (ECG machines), ultrasound diagnostic instruments, etc., if their operation involves radio frequency technology or may generate electromagnetic radiation, also need to pass FCC certification. This ensures that they will not interfere with other devices during use, while also remaining immune to interference from other devices, thereby guaranteeing the accuracy of medical diagnosis and treatment.

5. Consumer Electronic Equipment

For example, microwave ovens, induction cooktops, vacuum cleaners, electronic toys, etc. These electronic devices, which are closely related to people‘s daily lives, vary in function but may all generate electromagnetic radiation during operation. They need to comply with FCC certification requirements to ensure consumer safety.

III. Main Types of FCC Certification

Based on the characteristics and usage scenarios of the product, FCC certification is mainly divided into the following types:

1. FCC ID Certification

Applicable to wireless transmitting devices, such as mobile phones, two-way radios, wireless routers, etc. These devices need to apply for a unique FCC ID number, which consists of a Grantee Code and a Product Code, and serves as an important identifier for the device to pass FCC certification. The test items for FCC ID certification are relatively stringent, including RF output power, frequency range, modulation method, spurious emissions, etc., to ensure that the wireless communication performance of the device complies with regulations and does not cause interference to other wireless devices.

2.FCC SDoC Certification

That is, the Supplier‘s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC), applicable to most electronic devices except wireless transmitting equipment, such as computers, printers, televisions, etc.Manufacturers or importers need to self-declare that their products comply with the relevant FCC technical standards, and retain test reports and other related documents for FCC review. The SDoC certification is relatively flexible, but enterprises are responsible for the compliance of their products.

IV. Core Test Items of FCC Certification

The test items of FCC certification mainly focus on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio frequency (RF) performance, specifically including the following aspects:

1. Electromagnetic Radiation Test

Measures the intensity of electromagnetic radiation generated by electronic equipment during operation, ensuring that within the specified frequency range, the radiation intensity does not exceed the limits prescribed by the FCC. This is to prevent the electromagnetic radiation produced by the equipment from interfering with the normal operation of other electronic devices, as well as to avoid potential impacts on human health.

2.Conducted Emission Test

Detects interference signals emitted by electronic equipment through conduction paths such as power lines and signal lines. These interference signals may propagate along the lines, affecting other devices connected to the same power grid or communication network. During the test, the intensity of the interference signals is measured at different frequency points to ensure compliance with standard requirements.

3.Immunity Test

Evaluates the ability of electronic equipment to resist external electromagnetic interference, i.e., whether the equipment can maintain normal working performance in an electromagnetic environment with a certain level of interference intensity. This is crucial for ensuring reliable operation of equipment in complex electromagnetic environments. For instance, in places with complex electromagnetic conditions such as hospitals and airports, the immunity capability of equipment is particularly important.

4. RF Performance Test (for Wireless Devices)

For wireless transmitting devices, RF performance tests are required, including transmit power, frequency accuracy, frequency stability, modulation accuracy, receiver sensitivity, etc. These test items are directly related to the communication quality of the wireless device and the degree of interference to other devices, ensuring that the device can communicate normally within the specified frequency range without causing excessive interference to other wireless signals.

V. FCC Certification Process

Determine the product category: First, the manufacturer needs to identify which category of electronic equipment their product belongs to and whether FCC certification is required.

Select the testing standard: Choose the appropriate FCC testing standard based on the product‘s characteristics and intended use.

Conduct testing: Including tests on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), radio frequency (RF) performance, etc.

Prepare application materials: After passing the tests, the manufacturer needs to prepare detailed application materials (FCC ID), including test reports, product manuals, circuit diagrams, etc.

Submit the application: Submit the application materials to the CTB (FCC ID) and pay the corresponding certification fees.

Review and approval: The CTB (FCC ID) will review the application materials. If everything meets the requirements, the FCC ID certification certificate will be issued.US FCC Certification
