RoHS certification

I. What is RoHS Testing?

RoHS testing refers to the analysis and evaluation of the content of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment to determine whether they meet the restriction requirements of the RoHS directive. The current EU RoHS directive specifies 10 restricted substances, mainly including lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr VI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP).
These hazardous substances pose serious threats to the ecological environment and human health. For example, lead and cadmium can cause neurological damage, while mercury may contaminate water sources. Through RoHS testing, companies can ensure that their products do not cause harm to the environment or health during production, use, and recycling.

II. Scope of Application of RoHS Testing
According to the RoHS directive, almost all electrical and electronic equipment requires RoHS testing, covering the following major categories of products:
1. Household appliances: e.g., refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, etc.
2. Information and communication equipment: e.g., computers, mobile phones, routers, etc.
3. Consumer electronic products: e.g., televisions, audio systems, gaming consoles, etc.
4. Lighting products: e.g., LED lamps, fluorescent lamps, etc.
5. Vending machines and other electronic equipment: e.g., automatic teller machines, medical equipment, etc.
It should be noted that certain equipment for specific purposes, such as military and aerospace equipment, as well as some medical devices, may be exempt from the restrictions of the RoHS directive. However, enterprises still need to verify their applicability.

III. How Can Enterprises Address RoHS Compliance Challenges?
1. Design stage: During the early phase of product development, choose environmentally friendly materials as much as possible and avoid raw materials containing high-risk substances.
2. Supply chain management: Require suppliers to provide complete material composition reports (e.g., compliance declarations, Material Safety Data Sheets / MSDS) to ensure that raw materials meet RoHS requirements.
3. In-house testing capability building: Enterprises may establish basic testing laboratories for preliminary screening of key materials.
4. Selection of testing bodies: Entrust third-party organizations to conduct RoHS testing to ensure that product quality meets international standards.
